EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SERGEY YUSIN
VORAKA: What initially drew you to photography, and how did your father’s influence shape your approach to the craft?
SERGEY: From a young age, I was captivated by art and had a natural artistic vision. My father, Gennady Yusin, a renowned wildlife photographer, recognized my passion and chose to mentor me, sharing his expertise and photography techniques that laid the foundation for my craft. I began my journey with wildlife photography, where there are no second chances to capture the perfect shot. This experience taught me patience, attention to detail, and the value of capturing authentic moments—principles that continue to shape my work.
VORAKA: How has your journey from Ukraine to Miami impacted your artistic vision and storytelling through photography?
SERGEY: Born in Ukraine, I later moved to Russia before finally settling in Miami in 2014. Miami’s vibrant culture, diverse communities, and beautiful locations have shaped my style, blending my background with the city’s energy to create unique stories.
VORAKA: What challenges have you encountered in transitioning from wildlife photography to fashion and commercial work?
SERGEY: Transitioning from wildlife to fashion photography required adapting to new techniques and environments. I needed to learn posing to guide models effectively and master various editing techniques to bring visions to life. Despite this shift, I continue to shoot wildlife, which keeps me connected to my roots and fuels my creativity.
VORAKA: Can you describe your creative process when preparing for a fashion or portrait shoot?
SERGEY: Before a shoot, I create mood boards, search for the perfect location, and collaborate with the team to align visions. Connecting with models involves creating a relaxed environment, allowing them to express themselves openly and authentically.
VORAKA: How do you establish a connection with your subjects to bring out their authentic personalities in your photographs?
SERGEY: Establishing a connection with models starts with creating a comfortable and trusting atmosphere. I take time to understand their personalities, guide them with clear direction, and encourage natural movement. Engaging in conversation and playing music helps models relax, allowing them to express themselves freely and work with confidence
VORAKA: How do you bring authenticity and emotion into your portrait photography?
SERGEY: I create a comfortable atmosphere, talk to clients, and help them relax. Capturing natural moments over forced poses is essential. I use a documentary approach, movement, and genuine laughter to make photos feel alive, emotional, authentic.
VORAKA: What are some of the most memorable projects or collaborations you’ve worked on, and why?
SERGEY: All my projects are important to me, making it hard to choose the most memorable. However, one that stands out was a photoshoot of a model waking up in bed at an intersection in downtown Miami. The unique concept and the challenge of executing it in a busy urban setting made it unforgettable.
VORAKA: How do you balance your professional focus on fashion photography with your personal passion for wildlife photography?
SERGEY: I balance both passions by dedicating time to each. Wildlife photography fuels my creativity, while fashion work challenges me professionally, creating a dynamic interplay between personal fulfillment and career growth.
VORAKA: What do you find most rewarding about teaching private photography classes, and how do you tailor your approach for each student?
SERGEY: Teaching allows me to share my passion and knowledge in a way that benefits others. It’s rewarding to see students discover their unique styles, and it also helps me grow as a professional. I tailor lessons based on their goals, ensuring practical, hands-on learning for real-world application.
VORAKA: What advice would you give aspiring photographers trying to develop their unique style and break into the industry?
SERGEY: Try new things and take risks without fearing mistakes. Developing a unique style takes time; study various genres, learn the basics, and keep practicing the same techniques repeatedly. Your own style will naturally emerge as you refine your approach through experience.
VORAKA: How do your hobbies, such as hiking and sports, influence your photography and creative outlook?
SERGEY: Hiking and sports keep me grounded and inspired. They teach discipline, provide fresh perspectives, and often influence my compositions and approach to photography. Going outdoors feels like meditation, helping me clear my mind and avoid creative burnout.
VORAKA: What’s next for you in your career, and are there any specific goals or projects you’re excited about?
SERGEY: I’m focusing on expanding my fine art print collection and exploring new creative collaborations. I’m excited to blend photography with other art forms to push creative boundaries.
