CAPTURING MEMORIES AND MAGIC: JARRETT SPENCE'S JOURNEY WITH JIGGYSNAPSHOT STUDIOS - VORAKA

Jarrett is the CEO of Jiggy Snapshot Studios. He started photography at a young age when his mom bought him a Polaroid camera. Taking photos of his family and himself during family trips, events or just in the house, Jarrett developed a love for taking photos. He even shot his own parents’ wedding pictures at the age of 9! As he got older, Jarrett used photography as an art outlet and a release from everyday life. He feels that photography is a form of magic, freezing time into a frame, having that moment last forever.

Memories last forever and having that photo to remind yourself of that time, it’s a very special feeling. He has taken photos for business owners, artists, social events and family gatherings around the East coast of America.

Jarrett Spence leaned more into photography after his father passed away as a coping method. He would just go outside to explore New York City, taking photos with either his phone or his Canon Powershot SX520 HS (his first professional camera). He would go to different places like Central Park, the Empire State Building, and Brooklyn Bridge Park. No matter the weather or the time, Jarrett would be outside, playing with his camera, and learning different settings. Soon after, he decided to take his hobby a step further and create JiggySnapshot Studios, the business he runs today.

Jarrett started his business by doing shoots outside, from taking dynamic images at some of the scenic spots in the city. From there, he started doing event photography for baby showers, graduations, and birthdays. He then moved his business to Washington, D.C. where he started to cover NBA/WNBA games, D.C. Fashion Week, D.C. Coffee Festival and more local events. The camera has taken Jarrett places he never thought he would be.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JARRETT SPENCE

Can you tell us about the moment you realized that photography was your true passion?

I realized photography was my passion when I did an assignment in college and decided to take photos of an art exhibit. As I was doing the assignment, I found out that this is something I really enjoyed.

How did your early experiences with your Polaroid camera shape your approach to photography today?

My experience with my Polaroid was really pivotal early on for me. Seeing all the old photos of me and my family took. The main basis of my photography philosophy is to make memories last forever, and that’s from me bringing it on family trips all the time.

What was it like to photograph your parents’ wedding at such a young age? Do you have any memorable stories from that experience?

I just remember me bringing the camera and taking photos. I didn’t think much of it as far as it being a career or business venture. I was only maybe 9 or 10.

How has your photography evolved since you started, especially after the loss of your father?

I used to only take pictures of my family and scenario stuff like buildings in the cities we go to. Now, I’m more intentional about taking photos of people and events. Helping them create memories with their loved ones.

What techniques or settings do you find yourself experimenting with most when capturing images in the city?

I try to use a lot of low lighting techniques to capture the gritty details of the city. Or sometimes I would use grain, I just started really doing that and I really like how my images come out.

Could you share a particularly memorable shoot or project you've worked on at JiggySnapshot Studios?

One of my favorite shoots ever was when me and my friend, Danni did a shoot at a studio that had a bunch of pianos and couches. It was a big studio with natural lighting. From the outside, it looks like an abandoned warehouse.

How do you balance the technical aspects of photography with your creative vision?

I try to make sure all my photos are sharp and realistic. I don’t do all the crazy photoshop edits. I like my photos to be clear and natural. Clients hire me for that reason so I try to provide that service every single session.

What challenges have you faced in building your photography business, and how have you overcome them?

Marketing is the hardest thing. It’s not my strongest skill but I’ve heard along the way. I learned to just put your work out there and people will find it. That’s the way to overcome most things, just doing it.

How has the photography scene in Washington, D.C. influenced your work and opportunities?

Right now, it’s different from the clientele I built while I was in New York. Right now, I’m working towards getting my business towards business owners, creating images to help them build their brand.

What advice would you give to aspiring photographers looking to turn their passion into a business?

Just start. Explore different types of photography. Learn your camera. Start with what you know, and just keep learning along the way. Try different techniques and editing strategies. Network yourself, carry yourself as a business.

What role does storytelling play in your photography? How do you aim to capture stories in your images?

I like to capture moments of happiness with my photos when it comes to events. Things that people can look back on and say “hey I remember that day!” For my portraits, I usually go with what the client is looking to accomplish with their session.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for JiggySnapshot Studios, and where do you see yourself and your business in the next few years?

If the Good Lord allows me, I would like to build a studio/creative space for likeminded creatives. I don’t want to limit myself to just photography, I also want to expand JiggySnapshot Studios to an all around content creation platform.
