EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KELSEY SEEHUSEN
Read the exclusive interview with Kelsey Seehusen to learn about the inspiration behind her journey to becoming a blonding specialist.
Voraka: What inspired you to specialize in blonding, and what do you love most about it?
Kelsey: Starting off my career as a color specialist is definitely where I cultivated my love for blonding. I fell in love with the challenge of creating the perfect shade, choosing the right foil placement for the desired look, and the forethought necessary for every transformation.
Voraka: How did studying at the Aveda Institute during COVID-19 shape your approach to
hairstyling?
Kelsey: Being a student during COVID-19 forced me to learn adaptability, and led me to adopt a
“go-with-the-flow” attitude. These attributes paired with learning fundamentals of hair, helped me embrace that, as much as you want to, you can not plan every part of a service to T.
Voraka: What’s the most valuable lesson you have learned from attending blonding
classes all over the U.S.?
Kelsey: It was fascinating how to see how different regions approach their blonding service as a whole. Elements of the service were different, like the consultation, pricing, photos, and marketing. It was amazing to be able to choose specifics to take back home to help set me apart in the Midwest
Voraka: What are some of the biggest misconceptions about achieving and maintaining
blonde hair?
Kelsey: A common misconception about blonde hair is that it is inherently damaged. Artificially blonde hair can absolutely be healthy, as long as there is thought and care put into the lightening service, correct expectations are set with guests, and extra care put into your hair at home.
Voraka: How do you personalize each client’s blonde transformation to suit their lifestyle
and personality?
Kelsey: Ensuring my guests’ color complements their character and their desired maintenance schedule is so important to me. I have to consider their lifestyle and facial features and find the perfect
balance to their inspiration photos. The goal is to enhance their hair in a way that fits their routine and budget.
Voraka: How do you balance technical precision with creativity when working on hair color?
Kelsey: This balance can be summed up in a quote from my mentor while I was a student: “Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist.” Originally a Picasso quote, and as I advance in my career I’ve found myself coming back to this sentiment.
Voraka: What role does social media play in your career, and how has Instagram helped
you build your brand?
Kelsey: Instagram plays a crucial role in my career by providing an accessible platform to showcase my work and build a community around my brand. Though social media skills didn’t come naturally at first, I’m grateful I persisted, as now it’s helping me attract a loyal and growing clientele.
Voraka: What’s your go-to advice for clients who want to keep their blonde vibrant healthy?
Kelsey: First and foremost is a quality shampoo, conditioner, and bonding mask for your specific hair. Second, a heat protectant, a silk pillowcase, and never sleeping with your hair wet can take you very far. I always
recommend coming in for a gloss at the eight week mark for maintaining vibrancy.
Voraka: How has working at Hour Rose Salon influenced your growth as a stylist?
Kelsey: I have never felt more assured in my career than at Hour Rose. The feeling of support and uplift from the salon has given me confidence in myself as a hairstylist, which has allowed me to make decisions and moves in my career that I otherwise wouldn’t have.
Voraka: What has been the most rewarding part of collaborating with brands and styling
for fashion shows?
Kelsey: I’m so appreciative for the opportunity to work with talented figures in my community and assist them bring their vision to life. Also, it is gratifying and surreal to watch hair that you styled walk down a runway in a large-scale fashion show, that was a career highlight for me.
Voraka: What’s next for you? Do you have plans to expand your expertise, explore new
techniques, or take on new creative projects?
Kelsey: I am putting my focus towards solidifying my clientele and community in Minneapolis, as well as expanding my social media reach. I have a lot of content that I am super excited to share with everyone, and I have some international classes that I have my eye on going to.
