INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR CHRISTINE DUQUE
What inspired you to write "Walking In My Shoes," and how do you see it contributing to the dialogue on diversity in the corporate world? I wrote this book based on the shocking reality that 80% of Asian American women do not reach top corporate leadership positions. Despite our academic achievements and higher incomes, Asian Americans are underrepresented. My goal is to raise awareness and spark dialogue on this important issue.
Can you share how your background in vocal performance and music theory influences your writing process as an author?
As a passionate opera singer and creative individual, I possess a deep affinity for languages and communication. This natural aptitude greatly supported me in my journey to becoming an author, enhancing my writing process through a love for words and expression.
How do you balance your roles as a corporate leader and an author, and do you find any intersections between the two?
Balancing my position as a corporate leader and author comes naturally to me. My debut book stems from personal experiences, inspired by the fusion of my roles. As an adept communicator in corporate leadership, my seamless ability to write and convey messages extends through my work as an author, opera singer, and creative individual.
What personal stories influenced "Walking In My Shoes" and its focus on breaking barriers for Asian women in corporate America?
The book was inspired by my personal experiences and those of Asian women around me. Realizing our shared stories transcended individuals and locations, I was compelled to shed light on systemic biases and challenges faced by Asian women in corporate America. Educating others through these narratives became my mission.
How does your involvement in academia and philanthropy influence the themes or messages conveyed in your writing?
Engaging in academia and philanthropy is integral to me, a form of giving back that aligns with my ethos of contributing positively to the world. My writing endeavors, particularly this book, are fueled by a desire to uplift others as I progress, paving the way for future generations.
What do you hope readers take away from "Walking In My Shoes," particularly in terms of promoting diversity and inclusion?
Through my book, I aim to inspire readers to advocate for diversity and equality through recognizing the strength of women supporting each other. By shedding light on cultural biases and gender norms, I invite action toward reshaping today's narrative of inclusivity. Through providing insightful analysis and real-world examples, I hope to spark change in our perceptions and behaviors.
Can you share any upcoming projects or initiatives in your writing career that you're particularly excited about?
This debut project as an author garnered positive feedback, hinting at future ventures. Apart from writing, I engage in diverse communication mediums. Alongside the book, I launched the podcast "Shattering Glass in Heels," delving into workplace challenges and triumphs, addressing discrimination and inequality faced by women, especially women of color and Asian women. Connecting with my audience through genuine narratives is a joy that comes to me effortlessly.
