Ihor Timankov was born in Sevastopol, which was part of the USSR at the time. Today, he lives and works in New Jersey, USA, where he continues to grow and evolve in his career as a photographer. His journey into photography began unexpectedly in 2008. At the time, he was working at a jewelry factory and found himself with enough free time during the workday to pursue self-development. One day, while browsing a local forum, he stumbled upon the page of a girl from Sevastopol who had posted atmospheric and captivating photographs. Deeply inspired by these images, he felt a strong desire to learn how to capture such moments himself.

Driven by impulse, Ihor took out a loan to buy his first camera. However, he soon discovered it wasn’t suitable for his creative needs. This marked the true beginning of his professional path. He delved into the technical aspects of photography but quickly realized that mastering the camera alone wasn’t enough—artistic vision and understanding were just as important. With YouTube still in its early stages, he turned to books and immersed himself in learning the art of photography through literature.

His early experience shooting in nightclubs played a defining role in shaping his style. Previously an introvert, the job forced him out of his comfort zone and taught him how to work with people in some of the most challenging lighting environments. It was during this period that he honed his skills in capturing dynamic scenes using both natural and artificial light. For eight years, he collaborated with the international online publication Geometria.ru, covering nightclubs and various events. This experience gave him a deep understanding of reportage photography, a genre that has become central to his work.

Ihor found that he loves telling stories through images observing, capturing, and preserving authentic emotions. This storytelling approach carries over into his portrait work, where he creates relaxed, natural shots by giving his subjects simple tasks to draw out genuine expressions and movement. His ability to connect with people and capture them in their truest form has become one of the hallmarks of his photography.

Over the years, he has also worked extensively with businesses, producing advertising photos that have appeared in regional magazines and on billboards. These projects have enriched his knowledge of commercial photography and taught him how to tailor his work to meet the needs of different clients.

Photography has taken Ihor across the globe, providing inspiration in countries such as Europe, Cyprus, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Ukraine, and Russia. These travels exposed him to diverse cultures and artistic perspectives. Now based in the United States, he is eager to explore the vast diversity of the country—its people, stories, and traditions—through his lens. He finds his greatest inspiration in people. Everyone has a unique story, background, and cultural identity, and Ihor is passionate about capturing these elements in his work. In the multicultural landscape of the United States, he sees endless opportunities to discover and convey meaningful human moments.

Looking ahead, Ihor is focused on continuous personal and professional growth. He is committed to further refining his skills, becoming fluent in English to enhance communication, and exploring new creative and entrepreneurial ventures. His ambitions include expanding his work in corporate and commercial portrait photography, launching a wedding agency, and participating in large-scale projects that allow him to create impactful visual stories. Through all of this, he aims to leave a meaningful imprint on the world of photography.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH IHOR TIMANKOV

VORAKA: What initially drew you to photography and how did your first camera shape your journey?

IHOR: At first, I liked the camera as a tech gadget, but I got fascinated with the process and started developing my skills. Over time, I became more aware of light, composition, and emotions, turning photography from a hobby into a profession.

VORAKA: How did working in nightclub photography push you out of your comfort zone and influence your style?

IHOR: I was quite introverted and found it difficult to approach new people, but nightclub photography forced me to interact with hundreds in one evening. It built my confidence, taught me to connect quickly, and helped me work in a dynamic, unpredictable environment.

VORAKA: What are the key elements of a compelling reportage photograph in your opinion?

IHOR: Emotion, timing, framing and context are essential. A photograph should tell a story and create a sense of presence. Composition, lighting, and framing help control what’s shown and influence perception. The key is capturing a moment that resonates with the viewer.

VORAKA: How do different cultures and environments shape your creative approach when photographing in various countries?

IHOR: Each culture has unique traditions and attitudes toward photography. I adapt by studying local communication styles and behavior. This allows me to capture authentic moments that reflect the atmosphere and people while maintaining a balance between my vision and cultural nuances.

VORAKA: What have been some of the most memorable or challenging events you’ve captured and why?

IHOR: Every event is challenging in its own way, but one of the hardest was photographing the Crimean Opera Ball. I worked with its organizers for eight years. It was always a grand event with many dancers and complex lighting difficult to shoot but incredibly exciting.

VORAKA: How do you bring authenticity and emotion into your portrait photography?

IHOR: I create a comfortable atmosphere, talk to clients, and help them relax. Capturing natural moments instead of forced poses is essential. I use a documentary approach, movements, and genuine laughter to make photos feel alive, emotional, and authentic.

VORAKA: What differences have you noticed between working as a photographer in the U.S. and in other countries?

IHOR: Photography in the U.S. is more structured—clients have clear expectations, and the market is highly competitive. Regulations can be stricter, but people are also more expressive. Nowhere else have I seen so many smiles in photos—Americans truly know how to bring energy to a shoot!

VORAKA: How do you balance working in multiple genres from reportage to commercial photography?

IHOR: I find common principles: using documentary techniques in commercial photography and applying commercial aesthetics in reportage. This approach keeps my work natural and engaging, regardless of genre, and allows me to switch between styles without losing quality.

VORAKA: What do you find most rewarding about telling stories through images?

IHOR: Photography preserves meaningful moments that become cherished memories. Seeing how my work matters to people, how they revisit their photos years later, is the most rewarding and inspiring part of my job.

VORAKA: What is your creative process when working with businesses on advertising and commercial photography?

IHOR: I analyze the client’s goals, audience, and brand style. Then, I develop a concept, lighting, and composition to create images that are not just visually appealing but also effective for business, evoking emotions and capturing attention.

VORAKA: What role does lighting play in your photography and how did you develop your expertise in various lighting conditions?

IHOR: Lighting is essential. I learned to work with different conditions—natural light, flashes, and studio setups. Experimenting and shooting in challenging environments taught me to adapt and use lighting creatively to enhance mood and atmosphere.

VORAKA: How do you stay inspired and continue growing as a photographer?

IHOR: I study other photographers’ work, analyze art, travel, and connect with different people. New places and stories inspire me. Constant learning, experimenting, and pushing beyond my comfort zone keep my creativity evolving.
